Memphis...

So as I said before... I LOVED this show. I think the main thing was just the energy on stage... there is one line in it where the lead girl Felicia says rock'n'roll music is just black peoples music sped up ... and Im going to be honest it is! Seeing the roots of modern music is so much more obvious when your in the heart of where it started...

The basic plot line is white boy thinks hes black - walks into a bar - falls in love with black girl and they try and work it out.

Amongst that is this massive narrative of segregation, both racial but also generational. The mother of the which guy - Huey Calhone says at one point i just believe those black people are wrong because thats what i was told (or something of this effect) and then Huey and Felicia are all about the changing times etc etc.

So i think what also assisted the fantastic music was that the plot line actually had substance.

The leads were amazing, although as much as I loved Huey I did find him a bit too weird at times, it seemed like he was a bit too over the top with the junkie effect... (kinda like Jonny Cash towards the end of walk the line) but otherwise the leads as well as the whole cast were amazing...

Perfect mix of funny serious energetic entertaining and musical brilliance...

It was also the original broadway cast which was something special as well as 2010 Tony winner...
