I thought i would continue to post my journal entries for my course... probably dont make much sense... mhe! Newbigin is the author of the book were reading. The question we had to discuss was around Lewis's meditations on a toolshed...
Newbigin says by placing our knowledge in doubt we begin to see through things in the end we can see through everything and consequentially end up seeing nothing. Resulting in Nihilism, to a place of nothingness. If we look along things we can actually see what the reality is. Lewis talks about this distinction whether it be looking at the beam of light, or the biological, chemical or psychological elements of something, rather than along it to see the reality.
The gospel is grounded in faith, and through Newbigin’s argument and the history of knowledge, we are called to reposition our starting point for knowledge in faith. Newbigin also suggests we place our certainty in God. This is made possible through the incarnation. We are able to have what Polanyi calls Personal Knowledge. If we begin to look at things as opposed to along them we are seeking truth in knowing that they are for certain.
Lewis urges us to “never allow the rot to begin.” Our desire to know for certain is what breeds in us this ability to look at the beam of light opposed to along it.
